Luke Halo Update

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio -- Luke Holko carries the bag into the living room, toddling his way along before resting on his knees.

"Catch Daddy!" he says as he opens the bag, grabs a ball and tosses it to his father, sitting on a couch. One, two, three, 10 tosses follow ... until Luke reaches in to grab a baseball wrapped in a plastic bag with the word "Captains" imprinted on it.

"That's from Ben, isn't it?" his mother says.

Aaron Fox Update

Today, Aaron is moving to in-patient rehab, after some jockeying back and forth by the different groups of evaluators and docs. Because some of the docs unfortunately saw Aaron after he'd been dosed with his withdrawal meds, they felt he was still too weak to go. We wish they would come when he is awake and alert and ready to rock and roll!

Matt Brown Update

The last three weeks have been very busy for Matt. He continues to work with his therapists on getting stronger and he has shown some good progress. He is eating more and getting stronger and we continue to focus on getting as many calories into him every day. Their goal is to get him taking in 1500 calories a day and we are up to around 800-900 per day. It is important to “feed the engine” as this will give him more energy and allow him to get the most out of his therapy sessions. His therapy team has now detected muscle movement in both his left and right biceps, his left wrist and just this past Wednesday picked up more muscle activity in his deltoids. These small steps are very encouraging. This along with him feeling better and getting stronger has led to the Shepherd Center team to push back his discharge date into May, a good sign.

June 3rd: "When Can I Go Home?"
Posted 8 hours ago
Cole has had a couple of days of terrific progress. Since he started therapy on Monday, he's already begun to eat real food, is walking the parallel bars (with assistance) and is communicating on a much more frequent basis. (Eating is a big deal…since many kids with brain injuries can't swallow correctly, so they have to stay on a feeding tube for long periods of time.)
Late today, Cole asked his Neurosurgeon "When can I go home?" His doctor told him, “Cole, just based upon the fact that you can even ask me that question tells me that you'll be going home sooner than anyone thinks.”
We're encouraged, but trying to stay balanced. We know that there will be good and bad days, and don't want to over-react to either.
Chuckle for the Night: Cole is a big MLB fan, but doesn't especially like the Yankees. However, his older brother Reed worships them...and maybe that's why Cole doesn't. Anyway, last night a nurse came to Cole's room and said there was a Scout for the Yankees in the waiting room. I thought, "I wonder which knucklehead friend of mine is doing this?" I went out, and much to my surprise, there was an incredibly kind man and honest-to-goodness Professional Scout for the NY Yankees standing there waiting for me. He explained that he'd heard of Cole's accident, and felt compelled to visit him even though he didn't know Cole or our family. After a very nice conversation, he left a gift for Cole to open once he woke up. (Thank you, Mike, and I promise I'll never let Cole root against the Yankees again!)
Fast forward to tonight. Cole's brother Reed showed up for his first visit with Cole since he woke up from his coma. When Reed walked in the room, Cole smiled a big smile, in a way that only Cole can smile...ear to ear. Reed quickly spied the Yankee goody bag and assumed he was going to clean up.

However, when Cole was asked if he was going to give Reed the Yankees booty, he quietly said, "Nooooooo Waaaaay." Once we saw the brotherly rivalry return, we knew Cole was on his way back.
Thanks be to God!
